Discussion Post #2 - Hegemony

Without a doubt, one of the most powerful and dominant groups that we deal with on a daily basis is our government. Hegemony mainly deals with dominant groups exercising control over weaker groups but with no means of force.

A perfect example of Hegemony in our government is the way we handled ourselves with helping out with Haiti. Our government knows that we are much more dominant than the Haitian government so without using force but through extreme pressure, we think that since we came to rescue that we should be making decisions.

Hegemony also takes place in baseball, starting with the commisioner (shown above). The teams in the big markets like the Yankees, Mets, Cubs, Red Sox, Dodgers think they have control over the smaller markets Kansas City, Cleveland, Minnesota.

  1. I like the baseball example but teams don't always give their consent to the commissoner or the league. Thats why they get fined all of the time for really idiotic reasons. Teams are somewhat forced to give their consent because if they don't they wouldn't be able to play.

  2. Bud Selig IS the ruling class of baseball. The picture is funny to me because he is standing there with his arm up and one finger in the air, somewhat depicting Hitler. Selig runs a tight ship. His rules are what they are and baseball isn't losing any of its real fans.

  3. i completely agree with you about government. The goverment is the biggest leader. They also lead people without force. But they do take money from the rich and use it for campaigns. Which in turn they help the rich by voting to give tax breaks to the rich. Its crazy how money works. The people with the most money help the government and the government helps them. It just doesnt seem fair that money has so much of an impact on normal people and the government.
